Destinee stood in her doorway and looked at her freshly painted walls. They looked even better in the light of day. She smiled and walked inside. She had a good hour before she needed to report to work. In that time, she could rearrange the furniture and her few belongings. She found that if she shoved the bed—which moved with surprising ease over the thin carpet—into the far corner, it gave the illusion of more space. And by centering the small desk, it could serve as both desk and coffee table. She put her finger to her lip and squinted, surveying everything.

She needed some plants. Plants made any place look better. Sue’s did anyway. Usually, the neighborhood grocery stores carried small houseplants. And sometimes, they sold the wilted plants for next to nothing. If she could find some of those and nurse them back to health, she could give her apartment a real homey feel for pennies.

She moved into the kitchen and opened the fridge. The smell nearly knocked her off her feet. Her eyes watered, and she plugged her nose. She grabbed one of her scarves and tied it around her nose and mouth, and then she took a chewed-up looking sponge and started scrubbing. She used dish soap, but it hardly made a mark on the filth. She needed some serious scouring powder.

Looking at her watch, she realized she didn’t have time to go any further before work. Maybe Sue had some cleanser she could borrow later.

She threw down the sponge, quickly changed her clothes, and ran out of the apartment toward the nearest bus stop. The subway would be faster, but the station was further down the street and the bus was already at the stop. She made it inside just before the doors closed. She held onto the hanging strap, swaying gently as the bus made its way down the street.

Destinee had the early morning shift on Tuesday that week. She opened the shop and busied herself organizing the tickets and pick-ups for the day. Her heart skipped a beat when she noted Holt’s ticket. His suit. The interview.

She gazed out the shop window and wondered when he’d be by to pick it up. Would he come while she was there or when Lady took over? She pressed the button that rotated the hanging rack until she came to his suit. She stopped the rack, hiked up the plastic bag, and looked at the fine cloth and expert stitching. She could easily see the richness and elegance of the garment. She put her hand on the fabric. He would look good in this suit.

But then, with his tall, well-muscled body, he’d look good in anything.

The bell rang and she whirled around, face to face with Holt.

“Oh, you’re here,” she said, going into business mode.

“Des.” Her name was soft on his lips, and she saw his pleasure at seeing her. He squared his shoulders. “I need my suit right away. Please tell me it’s ready.”

“Yes. Yes, it’s ready.
